THIS RESTAURANT IS NOW A PRIVATE EVENT SPACE 1300 on Fillmore Restaurant Review:
Located in the old Fillmore Jazz District, this soulful spot evokes the neighborhood’s dramatic 1940s era while introducing something fresh and glamorous. The soaring space drips with a style all its own using sultry feminine and masculine elements --- textured seating touched up with antique lace; rich, brown leather banquettes in the dining room and deep armchairs in the attractive lounge; and a “heritage wall” of blown-up, old-time photos of local jazz greats. Cocktails, such as the smooth Woodford Reserve Manhattan, are finely balanced, while the cooking is slow Southern with California ingredients and French-classical finesse --- think refined grits, butter and lots of cream. What the boneless Fulton Valley Farms fried chicken lacks in greasy authenticity, it makes up for in crispness and flavor. We want stickier richness in the sweet potato gnocchi, pooled with lemon beurre blanc, sweet corn, tomato and Dungeness crab, but the slow-braised short rib is a high-class indulgence, crowned with crispy onion rings and served over buttermilk-chive whipped potatoes in a flood of sweetened jus. The wine list features well-chosen U.S. treasures. A nightly happy hour runs from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.; don't miss the Sunday gospel brunch.
