Tucked into downtown’s boutique The Sam Houston, Curio Collection by Hilton, the sleek 17 has far more going for it than your typical hotel restaurant. Try to nab a table by the picture window to watch the bustling street traffic and enjoy the regional cuisine, a mash-up of local-produce-meets-hip-recipes. The kitchen creates seasonal menus that include everything from grilled cheese sandwiches (made with three local artisan cheeses) to a deconstructed beef Wellington and a sous-vide pork belly with apple butter and a light beurre blanc. A full bar and a wine list with several Texas bottlings, and creative house-made sorbets and spiced ice creams and warm cookies, round out the meal. The rooftop, with its permanent tent and air conditioning, offers views and serves as a private room for special functions.
