THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED 55 The Restaurant Restaurant Review:
What began as rising celebrity chef Michele Bernsteins The Strand has now evolved into 55 The Restaurant with former sous chef Sara Mair and new chef Jason Stron at the helm. It still offers an upscale bistro menu with international infusions and interesting diversity. Popular tuna tartare with sautéed ginger, scallions, capers, crème fraîche, caviar and garnished with house-made gaufrettes and Hudson Valley foie gras foreshadows a market-conscious list of main-course selections. Opt for one of the outrageously creative meat and poultry dishes such as chicken breast thats been stuffed with herbed Gorgonzola and roasted with white wine and grapes and served with lemon-flavored couscous. This oceanfront restaurant seems to attract the nouveau riche and the image-conscious more than serious gastronomes. We suspect that bar sales outweigh food sales and have a feeling that this is no accident. This hopeful, high-end revival located adjacent from The Savoy Hotel aims to overcome whatever curse doomed restaurants here to crumble. A typically fantastic renovation and concept for design are the forte of this restaurant group, which also brings us the ultra hip Café Tabac and Opium.
