Akbar's Own Restaurant Review:
Named for Mughal emperor Akbar the Great, this popular destination for well-executed Indian food is family-owned and -operated and offers budget-friendly meals. The kitchen turns out classic Kashmiri and Mughlai dishes and original creations with delicately balanced spices and flavors, paired with puffy breads. Start with onion bhajia (fresh onions battered with Indian spices and deep fried) and shrimp pakoras (wrapped in a crunchy sesame seed batter and lightly fried) while you peruse the menu. Particularly tasty is the fiery prawn vindaloo. The tandoor oven produces specialties such as fish and chicken tikka, all of which are included in Akbar's mixed grill. Among biryanis, heady with saffron, are choices of chicken, lamb, prawns or vegetables. Vegetarian dishes like the alu gobi (chopped cauliflower and potatoes) or tandoor oven-roasted eggplant bhartha cooked with onion, tomatoes, garlic and ginger are winners. A thoughtful wine list presents a wide-ranging selection of local and international reds and whites, and plenty of beers. Desserts include mango ice cream and ras malai, Indian-style cheese patties served in saffron and cardamom cream. Service is informative and professional.
