THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Alan Wong's Honolulu Restaurant Review:
One would think that after more than 15 years, Alan Wong's might have waned in popularity, but this eponymous restaurant is as hot as ever. It is not the setting that makes the place --- the restaurant, though Cal-bistro pleasant inside, is on the fifth floor of an undistinguished office building. Only the crowded valet parking downstairs tips off its location. Inside, it's the food that matters and while Wong is rarely in the kitchen these days, his well trained crew masterfully executes his signature pyrotechnic style. We encourage diners to venture into some of the daily specials --- particularly seafood. Offerings have included local opihi (limpet) in spicy tomato water with ume (salted Japanese plum) and shiso (perilla) essences; the dish demonstrated how ultra fresh seafood requires nothing more than skilled restraint to captivate the palate. The wine list is carefully crafted to complement the cuisine --- many whites and Rieslings pair well --- and the staff is confident in their recommendations.
