1899 Bar & Grill Restaurant Review:
While it may be unusual to find fine dining on a college campus, 1899 goes against the odds by offering a Southwestern steakhouse-meets-American bistro menu with pastas, seafood, steaks and vegetarian fare. Named for the year Northern Arizona University was founded, the restaurant features two-story windows that illuminate the dining area, plus other original building elements, including an oversize copper fireplace and a cozy bar. Roasted red pepper and Gouda soup, western bruschetta topped with chipotle-grilled chicken, or lobster-stuffed mushrooms are good dinner starters. For a main course, try the unique brisket achiote, bacon-wrapped loin of lamb, or grilled portobello mushrooms layered with tomatoes, fennel and zucchini. A full bar boasting regional tap beers and a nice wine list complete the experience. Waitstaff includes NAU hospitality students training for their degrees in the university's hotel and restaurant management program, and hours vary in the winter to coincide with the school’s winter break.
