Bootlegger Tiki Restaurant Review:
Bootlegger Tiki inhabits an historic building that in the 1950s was home to the Palm Springs branch of Don the Beachcomber, a Polynesian-themed establishment from bootlegger-turned-restaurateur Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt (aka Donn Beach). (Below the ground are tunnels that some speculate may have been used in the 1930s to escape gambling raids from a nearby hotel.) The small interior space is covered with lauhala matting, bamboo and seductive black velvet paintings. There are just a few booths plus several spots along the bar. The roster of exotic cocktails includes three variations on the Mai Tai: classic, Donn Beach's 1934 recipe and a new version dubbed The Bitter Mai Tai. Beverage director Chad Austin brings in unusual ingredients like tobacco bitters in the aptly named drink Coffee & Cigarettes. A popular choice is the Pod Thai, made with white rum, cardamom-lemongrass syrup and Thai basil. While imbibing, patrons can snack on Sriracha coconut popcorn, Coachella Valley dates or cheese and charcuterie plates.
