Gus's Barbecue Restaurant Review:
Gus's Barbecue features retro touches like a tin ceiling, but the feel is decidedly modern, with soft lighting and dark wood details in the rear dining room. In a nod to the establishment's history, vintage black-and-white photos of South Pasadena line the walls, while a chalk mural of a blues musician looks down on diners seated in stylish red booths. Start off with appetizers like shredded onion strings or an iron skillet of dense, moist cornbread served with a neon green jalapeño jelly that offers more sweet than heat. Gus's barbecue roots are well represented in signature specialties like dry-rubbed St. Louis spare ribs, Memphis-style baby-back ribs, Guinness-braised brisket, and Southern fried chicken. To complement the 'cue, pick from nearly a dozen sides such as crunchy sugar snap peas, pecan rice and sweet potato fries. Gourmet burgers, sandwiches, salads and soups round out the menu. Desserts continue the comfort food theme and include a classic red velvet cake and fruit cobbler. If you're in need of a cocktail to wash down all the stick-to-your-ribs fare, start sipping on a Mint Julep made with your choice of nine Bourbons, or try a “Southern Sangria” composed with red wine, peach liqueur, fresh fruit and Gus's secret Southern twist.
