Since 1977, Joso’s has been dishing up fresh Mediterranean seafood in a converted house. The sensual experience begins when you walk through the door, thanks to a red-painted interior, red tablecloths and red carpet. Founder Joso Spralja was half of the folk band Malka and Joso and host of a CBC music show back in the sixties. Celebrities still flock here for the calamari and the fresh fish, flown in daily from around the world and simply grilled over an open flame. Antipasti, spaghettini and risotto are all staple menu items and generously portioned. Try the smoked rainbow trout, dressed with olive oil and lemon. Side dishes include steamed Swiss chard with grilled peppers and beets. Desserts like light, creamy tiramisu and tangy liqueur-dosed palacinka are tasty finales. The wine list touts over 140 labels, some more obscure. During summer, a small patio opens out front, and the second floor accommodates both regular dining and private parties.
