Loco Pez Awards
Funky Mexican joint keeps 'em coming back for cheap margaritas and tacos.
Loco Pez Restaurant Review:
There's almost always a wait for a table at this kitschy L.A.-style Mexican spot located in a former Fishtown dive bar space, and for good reason. Loco Pez, with a name that translates loosely as "crazy fish," keeps the prices low --- the house Impala margarita goes down easy for $6, and tacos start at $1.85 --- and the atmosphere fun. The noisy room, more bar than restaurant, features mismatched Tiffany-style lamps overhead, a glass case with a collection of Pez dispensers behind the bar, and indie rock on the stereo. Create your own taco sampler, with the must-have Pez taco filled with deep-fried, breaded chunks of mahi mahi; the orange-scented cochinita pibil (roasted pork); and the chorizo and potato, the latter more subtle than expected. Or you can opt for a burrito, quesadilla or enchiladas, with your choice of fillings. Be sure to request a side of the house-made guacamole. Light and creamy tres leches cake makes for a smooth ending to this crazy --- in a good way --- experience.
