THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Blancos Bar & Grill Restaurant Review:
One of the oddest spots in tony River Oaks, Blanco’s Bar & Grill is better known as an old-school honky tonk featuring Texas dance bands at night. But it’s also popular for lunch and dinner. Don’t expect anything fancy; the wood frame building probably hasn’t seen any remodeling in 40 years, and the chow is pretty basic. Old photos, a stuffed bison by the dance floor and deer heads mounted over the bar --- with wax lips and beer pop tops tossed on their antlers --- just begin to describe the vibe. Swing by at lunchtime and you’ll find oil execs, priests and construction workers packing the joint for daily specials like fried catfish and chicken-fried steak smothered in gravy. But you really can’t go wrong with the burgers and chile cheese fries washed down with a cold beer. Or try the Saddle Dog, a big beef hot dog wrapped in a flour tortilla and deep fried. You won’t find health food at Blanco’s, but you will find a true piece of Houston history and a lot of friendly folks.
