The Drunken Munkey Restaurant Review:
The British Raj has time traveled to the Big Apple. Sort of. The Drunken Munkey is a cocktail bar and restaurant dedicated to the cuisine of British colonial India. The cocktail list is more extensive than the food menu and the British pub-like atmosphere and décor (think the supper clubs of colonial Bombay) make for a great setting to sip a drink and graze on curries. Gin, naturally, figures prominently in the cocktails, which is a good thing because the spirit goes well with subcontinental-inspired fare. Start with a round of pani puri, crispy flour puffs filled with chickpea chaat and tamarind-mint water, and a plate of mashed potato-stuffed peppers. Though it seems so on paper, the food isn’t particularly spicy, and any palate can indulge in tamarind-loaded fish curry or the creamy butter chicken tikka masala. End the meal with carrot pudding topped with a cardamom coconut cream.
