El Gato Negro Restaurant Review:
Housed in a small, nondescript building, El Gato Negro’s second outpost in Lakeview suffers from a lack of décor and poor acoustics. Nonetheless, the food is comparable to that served at the original French Quarter location. Its reputation derives from the well-prepared Mexican cuisine and unique margaritas --- look for such originals as carrot, pineapple with cilantro and lime, or mango and mint varieties. Such basics as tacos, burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas are always options. The adventurous will take the spicy leap to lollipop-style lamp chops with agave/chipotle glaze, or grilled chicken with real mole sauce made with chocolate, cinnamon and pecan. This may be the only place in town where you may order lobster claw meat in your fajitas and fresh poblano peppers stuffed with Louisiana crawfish. A short but decently selected wine list is offered. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus are available. For dessert, look no further than the tres leches cake. Also located at 81 French Market Pl., 504-525-9752.
