A fire almost shut it down and the owners have threatened to close, but the Felix Mexican legend of more than 50 years continues to endure. Most of its attraction can be found in the Spanish architecture, a cool white-stucco original with towering ceilings and colorful Mexican décor. The other half of Felix's charm may be explained by its mediocrity, as this cocina churns out bland comfort foods from the old days, before chains and fast-food joints took over. Loyal fans swear by its chile con queso, a sinfully greasy blob of cheese that somehow soothes the soul. Traditional favorites rule the roost at Felix, where the closest you'll come to gourmet Mexican is Marge's Entomatadas, enchiladas with a fresh tomato sauce instead of the usual chili gravy. Chile rellenos stuffed with beef, pecans and raisins; and chicken mole, with its distinct chocolate flavor, also offer changes of pace.
