Forbidden Root Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant & décor: This West Town watering hole feels like Chicago with its casual, open atmosphere, industrial décor and wraparound bar. Locals of all stripes wander in to sample the rotating selection of beer, with the occasional family coming in for brunch. A massive center bar is where many pull up a stool, but there are tables for larger groups.
Likes: With their aromas and botanical flavors, these brews are unexpected and a joy to sample.
Dislikes: The menu is limited, but this is more about the beer.
Food & Drinks: This is more brewpub (the first botanical brewery in Chicago) than restaurant, but you can get all-day dishes, brunch and bar snacks here. Grab some beef jerky or chicken skins to savor with your flight of Forbidden brews, such as the Strawberry Basil or Wildflower Pale Ale. An eight-ounce burger with Giardiniera mayo and Weiss aged cheddar is satisfying and juicy on a brioche bun. Dessert --- from the apple and walnut bread pudding to the beet cake --- is available, but who needs sweets when you can have more beer?
