Gyu-Kaku Restaurant Review:
This atmospheric Old Pasadena restaurant features exposed wood beams, brick walls and group-friendly booths. Gyu-Kaku specializes in yakiniku, which is a Japanese style of grilling meats that bolsters flavor. The name translates from Japanese as “horn of the bull” so, of course, you’ll find beef, including harami skirt steak in miso marinade and Angus kalbi short rib in tare soy marinade. Pork, lamb, duck, chicken and garlic shrimp are also in play. Vegetarians will appreciate the mushroom medley, Japanese sweet potato, garlic spinach and corn cheese. You’re expected to cook ingredients yourself, on tabletop charcoal grills, which can be fun. To drink, choose from saké, shochu and cold beer.
