Havana Sandwich Company Restaurant Review:
Building on the success of Big Mike’s Philly Steaks & Subs down Main Street, Mike Neimark opened this strip mall sandwich shop with John Shapiro. Pressed Cuban sandwiches are served on foot-long slabs of fluffy bread. The classic Cubano is one of the best incarnations in Los Angeles, featuring juicy shredded pork, sliced ham, pickles and Swiss cheese. There are a few national versions as well, like the Mexican-Cuban, the Irish-Cuban and the Mediterranean-Cuban, all with various ingredients. Havana Bowls contain white rice, black beans and mango-accented pico de gallo, topped with choices like crispy fried chicken strips lacquered with jerk spices, beef stew or Cuban roasted pork. To drink, opt for Hatuey, a beer originally bottled in Havana. For dessert, consider the Havana banana, caramelized fried banana with vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce and whipped cream.
