Highway 61 Roadhouse & Kitchen Restaurant Review:
It’s easy to get carried along by the bluesy décor theme that hearkens back to the Mississippi Delta, complete with murals highlighting notable musicians on the road south from St. Louis. The menu wanders Highway 61 (hence the name) from St. Louis to New Orleans. Appetizers alone run the gamut; favorites include toasted ravioli, muffuletta dip, tasso-shrimp kebabs, and waffle fries with pulled pork, melted cheese and bacon. Barbecue is St. Louis style, except for the shrimp, yielding moist and smoky ribs. Side dishes like sweet potato pie and red beans and rice tend toward the Southern end of the highway, but for dessert, the gooey butter cake is pure St. Louis. Fittingly, the cocktail menu runs from a hurricane to a Sazerac, and the bar gets busy when local musicians take the stage on the weekends.
