House of Fortune Restaurant Review:
One of McLean’s oldest old-timers, this restaurant features the chef from DC’s now-closed, one-time high-end Chinese destination, Mr. K’s. You won’t be disappointed in any of the dishes, though some may seem more Chinese-American than strictly Chinese or Taiwanese. Much depends on your selections, of course, and a good place to start is to browse through the House Specials, which feature a mix of Cantonese and Szechuan fare, from chicken with king oyster mushrooms to Szechuan fish filet. Add on Peking duck, salt and pepper shrimp and crispy beef, and you’ve just ordered an emperor’s banquet. Off the regular and equally lengthy menu, choices include the same mix of regional favorites. Items that do not fit are the pad thai and Singapore rice noodle options. Skip those; there’s too much else to enjoy. Soup dumplings are offered at lunchtime during the week.
