Ivan Ramen Slurp Shop Restaurant Review:
Ivan Orkin is a ramen legend in Tokyo. Having moved there and mastered the art and craft of ramen making, Orkin has now attempted to take on New York City. This stand, located inside the Gotham West Market in Hell’s Kitchen, was his first North American foray. (He also operates a restaurant on the Lower East Side.) There are a small handful of ramen bowls from which to choose: two mazemen varieties, shoyu ramens (soy-based) and one shio (salt-based). If you’ve come for "soup" steer clear of the mazemen. At least on your first visit. The roasted garlic mazemen, however, is decidedly satisfying (though portions are somewhat small), with a rich, thick garlicky taste and one rectangular piece of unctuous pork. Also available are rice bowls, which are decent, but they are not the reason you came here in the first place.
