Jack's Fire House Restaurant Review:
When this converted firehouse in the Fairmount district first opened, it was the sine qua non for unusual cuisine, mostly game dishes and quirky combinations. More than two decades later, the rambling, casual building with its big square bar is still a very hot ticket. Consulting chef Jack McDavid, known for his homespun overalls and support of local agriculture, sources ingredients from more than 250 farmers and invests in local farms and greenhouses to get vegetables and herbs year round. Everything is house-made, from the mayonnaise and ketchup to the biscuits and chocolate chip cookies. McDavid’s down-home touch is apparent in dishes such as black-eyed pea soup with hog jowls, roast chicken with bacon mac ‘n’ cheese, and his signature ribs.
