Jayakarta Restaurant Restaurant Review:
Indonesian cuisine is rich with influences---a little Indian, a bit of Chinese, some Malaysian---and Jayakarta skillfully blends these elements into exciting fare. Singaporean dishes are a sideline here, so start with the roti, a Singaporean pancake served with curry sauce, and the krupuk, Indonesian shrimp crackers that are served with a first-rate peanut sauce. The gado-gado, a warm salad of fresh vegetables topped with fried tofu and hard-cooked eggs, is a signature dish. Any of the rice plates are worth tasting, but be certain to order beef rendang, cubes of beef cooked long and slow in coconut milk until the sauce is thick and the meat is fork-tender. The satays are decent but not as exciting as the other choices on the menu, and fish cakes are bland and rubbery. No matter---there are plenty of good options, and the warm staff will be more than happy to guide you through the menu.
