Jidori Restaurant Review:
Australian chef Brett Redman is the man behind Elliot’s Café in Borough Market and seafood-driven The Richmond in Hackney. To this list he adds Jidori, located in the emerging culinary hot-spot of Dalston in East London. The tight and focused menu of Japanese small plates and skewers is inspired by the yakitori restaurants found across Tokyo, and it caters to the handful of tables and bar seating around the open kitchen, which lies at the heart. The concept is quite simply cooking good quality ingredients over charcoal, with yakitori being the main focus. Get an array of items, even one of everything if you're a pair and particularly hungry. Don't miss the visually striking and joy-to-eat tsukune, two minced-chicken skewers with an egg yolk and tare dipping sauce; the katsu curry Scotch egg with a runny center; or the koji fried chicken. Desserts are limited but what's there is first-rate, such as the ginger ice cream with miso caramel. For drinks, take your pick from the honed list of excellent saké and shochu, dabble with an aged Japanese whiskey, or choose a top craft beer.
