Kanpai Sushi Restaurant Review:

Perfect for either a quiet weeknight dinner or a tasteful special occasion, this Shell Beach restaurant offers a good mix of traditional and contemporary. Start with an appetizer of crispy tempura with shrimp and vegetables, a grilled yellowtail collar, or little pillows of crispy rice topped with spicy tuna. From there, opt for an omakase (chef’s choice) sashimi/sushi combination, a miso-glazed local black cod filet or an Alaskan roll with crab, salmon and avocado, topped with paper-thin lemon slices. If you’re more into turf than surf, the chicken/pork broth ramen bowl, the beef teriyaki combo or the katsu pork curry plate won’t disappoint. For dessert, the green tea cheesecake is a must. As befitting its name (“cheers” in Japanese), Kanpai has a selection of premium sakés by the glass or bottle, as well as a very decent list of local wine and a few draft beers.
