THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Kawa's Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar Restaurant Review:
Don’t expect much from the décor at Kawa, the real artwork is on your plate. Whet the palate with a sunomono salad, marinated cucumbers, surimi, octopus and shrimp (the sushi chefs are open to switching out the octopus for salmon or tuna). Rather than ordering a slew of nigiri and familiar rolls, order the locals' favorite. It’s so big you may not have room for more. Feast your eyes (and mouth) on the Monterey roll, filled to the brim with tempura shrimp, avocado and cream cheese. Not enough? Good, because it gets topped with tuna, barbecued eel, salmon and shrimp. Time to order that 22-ounce Kirin. If you can still handle another roll, scroll down the menu to the tokonata which also favors tempura shrimp, but the flavors take a fusion turn as basil, crunchy macadamia nuts, salmon, unagi and toasted coconut play games in textures. Not so daring? You can still visit, just stick with the straightforward tempuras and teriyakis. Just try to contain your envy as your buddy's roll arrives.
