Kihon Sushi + Japanese Tapas Restaurant Review:
Like so many good sushi restaurants, this Naples Island venue is located within the confines of a humble strip mall. The interior is instantly familiar, as earth tones, a single-room dining space and a long sushi bar showcasing chef/partner Erwin Angeles’ selection of fresh seafood work together to make guests feel comfortable quickly. We recommend exploring the hot and cold small plates before marking off your sushi order. Dishes such as the seared Hokkaido scallops served with kiwi, and the foil bag filled with steamed mixed Japanese mushrooms, convey big flavors through simple ingredients. Angeles does a nice job crafting sushi creations, as his yellowtail, salmon, red snapper and other classics don't require the intrusion of soy sauce or wasabi. Whimsical rolls --- think albacore crab stick roll (named Walter after a certain character from “The Big Lebowski”) --- are options for those who want something a little more approachable. If you're not looking for the full izakaya or omakase experience, you can settle in with a sumptuous bowl of meticulously prepared ramen. For dessert, tempura ice cream awaits. There's a small list of wines and craft beers, but your best bet is to round out your experience with a Japanese brew or saké.
