Localis Restaurant Review:
Equal parts refined and rustic, upscale and understated, Localis shines as both a destination eatery and a neighborhood bistro. The place is a bit cramped yet comfortable, with natural stone and reclaimed wood throughout. The main dining area consists of a few tables and a bar, but an enclosed outdoor patio doubles the space. As its name implies, Localis showcases the best of what nearby growers have to offer. Herbs are grown onsite, seasonal produce picked up at farmers markets, meat raised at regional farms. Starters include a bright halibut and shrimp ceviche peppered with almonds and stone fruit, offset with the crunch of house-made potato chips and a refreshing jalapeño lime aïoli. Pan-seared Placer County chicken was fork-tender within its enveloping golden crust, served alongside spiced smashed potatoes. Other choices include fire-roasted octopus, braised rabbit with roasted tomato risotto, and duck confit with squash-coconut soubise. For dessert, the strawberry bread pudding was well balanced with a sweet-sour compote and tangy buttermilk gelato. The chef’s tasting menu --- with or without wine pairings --- gives diners full insight into the kitchen’s artistry, while the wine menu continues the local theme with wines primarily from California.
