THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mei Ling Restaurant Review:
The combination of Chinese and vegetarian dishes is a rare one, and this handsome, cliché-free spot with an impeccably dressed staff goes beyond just being meatless to offer soy milk smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, brown rice and soy protein masquerading as chicken, beef, ham and shrimp, all with Asian sensibility. The kitchen is skillful with sauces, including ginger-garlic, white garlic, spicy Szechuan, black bean and the Mei Ling special, a soy sauce based stir-fry blend. Some dishes are almost indistinguishable from the originals, and these include dumplings, scallion pancakes and hot-and-sour soup. Although the shrimp is a substitute, there are a few authentic fish dishes, including citrus-glazed halibut, salmon with coriander spice rub and sautéed pickerel with snow peas and red peppers. While most non-vegetarians would undoubtedly prefer the real thing to soy substitutes, this is a place where they can be relatively happy. Proprietors Tom and Megan Lin came up with the restaurants name by combining theirs.
