Agave Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant: Agave faces the stone wall surrounding Atlanta's legendary Oakland Cemetery. The early 20th-century building it occupies retains much historic charm, including rough-textured brick walls and lots of wood. Embellishing the walls are images and objects that reinforce the Southwestern theme, including prints from Navajo artist R.C. Gorman. Utilitarian and decorative pottery, folk crosses, and the sand-inspired color palette of that region contribute to the ambience.
Food & Drinks: Chef-owner Jack Sobel adapts traditional regional dishes such as a deeply seasoned, hominy-laden posole and a New Mexico green chili stew. In fact, the prized Hatch green chilies appear in several dishes. We enjoy the flavors of the fried chicken and meatloaf, the collards cooked with honey, apple cider and smoked bacon, and the first-rate beans. Shrimp prepared with añejo tequila, a grits cake and grilled asparagus was well prepared, the tender large shrimp (a half dozen) needing no further adornment. Classic flan requires none of the froufrou that accompanies it. Start a meal with the Gruet Brut from New Mexico to get into the spirit. The wine list is sensitive to the food, and there's a huge list of tequilas for those who seek them.
