Boasting vegetarian options galore, art on the walls and monthly storytelling events, Backroad Pizza is the most colorful place in Santa Fe to get a hearty New York style pie. In a roomy location on Second Street, Backroad is ideal for a low-key meal (with a bottle of wine if you like), especially if you hang around afterward for billiards in the upstairs loft. Though the traditional pie toppings --- sausage, tomatoes and chicken --- sound mundane, the sausage is house-made, tomatoes are sun-dried, and the chicken is house-roasted. And for a true Santa Fe experience, try ordering spicy green chile on your pizza. Backroad is off the beaten tourist path, but well worth the five-minute drive from downtown for a slice --- or a whole pie.
