Bakesale Betty Restaurant Review:
Bakesale Betty sells a tempting array of home-style desserts, some with an Australian bent --- blue wig-wearing owner Alison Barakat hails from the land down under, and also did a three-year stint at Chez Panisse. We like her ginger cookies, brownies and lamingtons, squares of sponge cake split and filled with jam, then dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut. Lemon bars are first-rate; ditto on the sticky date pudding. The menu also lists a few sandwiches, and those in the know opt for the famous fried chicken sandwich: tender, greaseless fried chicken on a soft roll, topped with a tangy, mayonnaise-free slaw available with or without a jalapeño kick. Diners eat outdoors at vintage ironing boards; hours are sadly short, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
