Barbaro Restaurant Review:
The folks that brought us the ultra-eclectic The Monterey in Southtown have planted an equally inventive, Italian-inspired bistro in Monte Vista. The semi-historic setting has been spiffed up as a frame for pizzas on the order of one with taleggio, hash browns, honey and kale (it works); salads of the sort that spring from arugula with lemon vinaigrette and ricotta salata; and small plates such as roasted broccoli rabe with salt cod, egg foam and more (pick this over the cauliflower al forno). Cocktails like The Man About Town (great with the upscale olive mix) take liberties with the classics, and there’s also a limited but likeable wine list; craft beers rotate with dizzying frequency. Both the daily happy hour and the late (for San Antonio) happy hours are additional pluses. Expect to dine with ’hoodies and foodies alike.
