Traditional Mexican food and drink get the serious and upscale treatment.
Barrio Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant: Taking the opposite approach from light-hearted, fun cantinas that paved the path for Mexican food in the U.S., this Capitol Hill restaurant boasts concrete floors and heavy metal chairs, plus a wall of 200 flickering candles.
Food & Drinks: Owned by the masterminds behind Purple Café & Wine Bars, Barrio offers creative Mexican cuisine with Pacific Northwest twists. Dishes include a Dungeness crab chile relleno stuffed with butternut squash and chorizo; a trio of sliders, brioche buns topped with grilled beef, tinga de pollo and chipotle barbecued pork; and grilled prawn and rockfish ceviche. Inventive taco combinations fill house-made tortillas with roasted beets and crunchy pumpkin seeds, or pork plus caramelized pineapple. Desserts include smoked salt caramels and churros. Wines, beers, specialty cocktails and tequilas are available.
