Big Mama's Rib Shack Restaurant Review:
Mama's place hardly looks like a country rib shack, thanks to the premises' former tenant, a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant with trendy aspirations. The mirrored room is stylishly spare, with walls painted in cinnamon, mocha and pumpkin hues, and some tables dressed in white linen. With a blend of Louisiana comfort and Southern barbecue, the seemingly endless menu starts with fried oysters, hush puppies, a blackened chicken salad and spicy jambalaya or gumbo. Fried chicken comes with two thighs and one leg, while white meat can be ordered for a small surcharge. Beef tri-tip, fried pork chops and blackened spicy shrimp are among the house favorites; but the fried catfish is a bit heavy and the baby-back ribs, while full of flavor, just don’t pull off the bones like at some of the city’s top rib joints. Classic sides of black-eyed peas, fried okra and cornbread complete the necessary Southern additions, though one should save space for homemade desserts like peach cobbler, red velvet cake and sweet potato pie. Daily happy hour includes food and drink specials, and one of the city’s best selections of Southern beers ranging from Dixie and Voodoo to Abita, Jockamo and Purple Haze.
