Bistro 45 Restaurant Review:
A charming Art Deco bungalow transformed into a contemporary, art-filled restaurant, Bistro 45 is both cosmopolitan and homey. After more than 20 years, often-present owner Robert Simon continues to ensure high culinary standards and warm, professional service, despite tweaking the Bistro from fine dining venue to a more casual experience. White linen remains (topped with butcher paper) while antique mirrors and contemporary lighting maintain a balance between upscale and relaxed sensibilities. The menu offers some small plates like an albacore tartare with cucumber-yuzu vinaigrette, wild white shrimp ravioli, and a composed heirloom beet salad. Larger plates range from Duroc pork chop with cherry-sherry jus to rack of lamb with black tea essence. Desserts still include Bistro 45’s chocolate soup (essentially a soft soufflé), a take on tarte Tatin and a cheesecake crêpe. Simon, one of L.A.’s most wine-savvy restaurateurs, offers 60 wines by the glass and an eclectic list with many bottles under $50, plus a reserve list that preserves a good deal of his acclaimed lineup from Bistro 45’s more upscale days. Some patrons favor the outdoor terrace, with its retractable roof, over the bustling dining room.
