Bloodroot Restaurant Review:
Years before "going green" was a trend, this veteran vegetarian spot nailed it, and it's still going strong. As conscientious as it gets, the eclectic menu encompasses virtually every sort of cuisine, and on any given day is dictated by the yields from the garden and the best on offer at the market. The dining room itself is an ode to feminine worth throughout history. There are antique photographs of women, vintage furnishings and even a loom. In addition, the restaurant always features a number of nourishing soups made with natural, organic ingredients; try the classic minestrone or the curried lentil. Entrées include hearty collard greens with sweet potato, black-eyed peas, rice and cornbread as well as a tender linguine tossed in a pepper and tomato sauce and topped with grilled shiitake mushrooms. Food can be altered to comply with vegan standards, too. The wine list incorporating organic selections is in keeping with the restaurant's philosophy. Desserts like a cranberry kissel and a creamy brown rice pudding are free of refined sugar, but sweet nevertheless.
