Brent's Deli Restaurant Review:
Brent's occupies a sprawling space in one of those nondescript Valley strip centers, and one suspects its deep-in-the-Valley location is one reason some people don’t give it the respect it deserves. But Brent’s is one of the top delis in L.A., even though it lacks the urban vibe of Langer’s or Canter’s. Inside, brick walls surround green leatherette booths, a standard deli counter and a rotating dessert display showcasing the restaurant's signature foot-high chocolate and carrot layer cakes. But there may be no better way to judge a kosher-style deli than its matzoh ball soup, and Brent's is solid, although the softball-size matzo balls could use more assertive seasoning. We are particularly fond of the pastrami sandwiches, just spicy enough to be balanced by a slather of Russian dressing on a topnotch rye with a crunchy, chewy crust. Complete dinners range from meatloaf to liver and onions to a lean brisket. Breakfasts feature traditional matzo Brie and challah french toast, and don’t forget the chocolate egg cream. One more plus --- unlike many delis on both coasts, the servers here provide genuinely friendly service. Also located at 2799 Townsgate Ave., Westlake Village, 805-557-1882.
