Buck's Restaurant & Bar Restaurant Review:
Situated on the ground floor of a century-old hotel-turned-apartment building in a neighborhood of Victorian mansions, Buck’s serves a mixture of retro and contemporary American fare. The dining room is painted dark green, which offsets dozens of vases filled with a variety of white flowers. Silverware and china are purposely, and charmingly, mismatched. If you are feeling nostalgic, order oysters Rockefeller, the Caesar salad, and the filet mignon dressed in blue cheese and bordelaise sauce. Equally old-fashioned are the country-fried quail entrée and the thick pork chop finished with bourbon maple glaze. The more adventurous dishes include crispy fish with hot/sweet chili and spicy Cantonese noodles (chicken, shrimp, beef or vegetarian versions). You can request custom combinations of noodle ingredients. Service is always accommodating. A member of Urban Bourbon Trail, the bar features well-crafted cocktails. The wine list is nicely priced, although selections, geared toward popular California labels, are not exciting. The dessert of choice is the almond-and-chocolate mocha dacquoise.
