Canoe House Restaurant Review:
A makeover has transformed a neighborhood diner into a South Pacific scene, with Polynesian masks, surfboards, tiki lamps and an abundance of bamboo. Tropical cocktails might have been inspired by Trader Vic’s, and a brief wine list is offered. Starters (“pupus”) include popcorn shrimp with jalapeño tartar sauce, Hawaiian-style poke, and kalua pork nachos layered with cheese, black beans, avocado and sour cream. Several Asian-inspired fish taco options are available, and a selection of burgers includes a predictable “pineapple express” with teriyaki sauce. Macadamia-crusted mahi mahi or Hawaiian ribs suit bigger appetites, and hula mud pie or pineapple upside-down cake complete the experience at this intentionally kitschy setting that is fun for kids.
