Clarklewis has never lost its luster and creative spirit. Although it is situated on a former loading dock with glass doors opening onto industrial building-lined Water Avenue, the countryside never feels too far away. The frequently changing menu reads like a Portland Farmers Market shopping list: Jacobsen sea salt, Chop salami, Kingfisher arugula and more. The chef’s family-style, four-course tasting menu, a deal at $60 per person, offers the chance to try a range of dishes. Choices may include spaghetti with Dungeness crab, lemon, scallions, basil and caviar; a New York steak with a potato tart, kale, cipollini onions and horseradish; or grilled trout with mizuna, radishes, Niçoise olives and lemon verbena. Desserts include chocolate coconut pecan torte. The wine selection spans the globe, providing something for everyone. For large gatherings or intimate special occasions, or simply for enjoying cocktails and bars snacks, this spot is a favorite destination.
