Goode Co. Seafood Restaurant Review:
You’ll find this seafood spot just around the corner from restaurateur Jim Goode’s Kirby empire, which also includes Goode Co. Taqueria. Ambience makes a big impression, thanks to the cool vintage railroad dining car location, chrome bar stools and original Wurlitzer. But the real reason to visit is the food. Start with a plate of fresh oysters straight from the Gulf or try the ceviche campechana, a chilled seafood cocktail in a spicy tomato sauce with avocado, served spilling over the top of a soda fountain glass with tortilla chips. We also like the buttery gumbo, seafood rice and the spicy empanadas that have accompanied every entrée since the place opened back in the 1980s. For a twist on tamales, go for the spicy shrimp version served with a tangy tomatillo sauce; nor can you go wrong with the mesquite-grilled shrimp platter. More mainstream choices, like the grilled catfish or fried shrimp, are just as solid, plus you’ll also find a gluten-free menu along with classic cocktails, cold beer and a limited wine list. Oh, and try to save some room for the chocolate cream pie.
