Oceanside's beachside hangout sports a lively ambience, ocean views, a hopping bar scene, and Baja-meets-Southern California coastal cuisine on its expansive menu. Start with oysters on the half shell with a jalapeño mignonette or peel-and-eat shrimp. Sure, there are the requisite fish tacos, but Hello Betty serves up serious varieties, with both grilled and fried versions and proteins such as mahi mahi, cod, oysters, smoked fish, calamari, Mexican shrimp, pork belly, steak and vegetables. For casual fare, we recommend the fish ‘n’ chips or cheeseburger, while those seeking a little Hawaiian flair can try the Loco Moco, a burger stacked with spam, brown gravy, fried egg and onions. Mesquite-grilled fish like yellowfin tuna or California halibut come with tasty accompaniments, perhaps roasted tomato salsa or citrus butter. A whole fish with salsa verde and steamed mussels with fries round out the selections. Locals and visitors flock to the long bar and sundeck for craft cocktails and IPAs. We like the vintage dune buggy set in the dining room, surf photos along the wall and nautical theme.
