Himalayan Spice Restaurant Review:
At this large neighborhood establishment specializing in North Indian and Nepalese cuisines, Indian artifacts and a section of upholstered seating create a pleasing atmosphere. What unites its mix of dishes is plenty of flavor. A typical Nepali dinner could start with the assertively seasoned broth-based aalu tama soup with bamboo shoots, black-eyed peas and potato. Couple it with stuffed chicken dumplings served with homemade tomato achar (sauce) and you almost have a complete meal. We enjoyed the goat thali and the Choila of grilled lamb with spices, onions, ginger, garlic and cilantro. Indian specialties range from familiar, popular fare such as Chicken 65 to samosas and chicken tikka masala. But the more unusual selections, such as lamb sai korma (lamb cubes in a silky sauce of cashews and yogurt), step outside the box. Classic lamb vindaloo and assorted biryani also are offered. A good dozen vegetarian dishes are available. Check out the rice pudding for dessert. The lunch buffet is a $10 meal deal ($11 on weekends). The wine list is nothing special, but there is beer and a standout mango lassi. Try a nice hot chai or the aromatic black tea.
