Izakaya Sozai Restaurant Review:
Ramen aficionados huddle together on the wind-abraded sidewalk to cram into this light-filled izakaya with seating for 32. Inside, diners are enveloped in a scene abuzz with funky music and lighthearted banter. Chef Ritsu Osuka’s tonkatsu ramen, with its creamy, pepper-forward pork broth and fried, braised pork belly is the main attraction. Not to be overlooked is Osuka’s knack for marrying opposing flavors and textures into approachable small plates that differ nightly. Ankimo monkfish liver pâté is paired with teriyaki reduction and sliced strawberries. Creamy spicy tuna is served atop a crispy rice croquette and garnished with jalapeño. Savory, fried panko softshell crab is bedded with sweet mango salsa. A wide range of saké is available by the carafe or bottle, and beer can be ordered by the bottle or pitcher.
