Kula Lodge Restaurant Review:
On the slopes of Haleakala, at the 3,200-foot elevation in the upcountry area of Kula, the Kula Lodge has been around for decades. A big breakfast crowd, usually people who have trekked up the 10,000-foot Haleakala Crater to see the sunrise. We drive up especially for the vegetarian benedict with shiitake mushrooms and a great hollandaise. For dinner, we like to go just before sunset to take in the magic that Kula is famous for. The sky produces a palette of colors lighting the rolling green hills of the upcountry. Dinners range from vegetarian items to New Zealand lamb chops to a mouth-watering pepper filet mignon with mashed potatoes. The food at dinner is not unique, but it’s usually good. When it’s not, the atmosphere almost makes up for it.
