Los Agaves Restaurant Review:
Mexican food is more than tacos and burritos, and Los Agaves uses recipes and flavors from places like Oaxaca and Guadalajara, providing a broader range of inspiration. You’ll find solid versions of the house-made, creamy guacamole, alambres and chicken tostados. But forgo the usual suspects in favor of octopus al pesto, comprised of tender sautéed octopus with hoja santa pesto, or the mole negro Oaxaca with grilled pork topped with roasted pasilla chile peppers, which is both semi-sweet and smoky. Ceviche costeno with passion fruit salsa uses chunks of marinated halibut, diced tomato, mango, red onion and olive oil stuffed into an Anaheim pepper. Los Agaves cooks all its own meats and hand-crafts its salsas and corn tortillas daily. A small selection of local and Mexican beers on tap and by the bottle is offered, as is a modest array of Santa Barbara wines and, of course, margaritas. Also located at 600 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara, 805-564-2626; the Camino Real Marketplace, Goleta.
