Mad Mex Restaurant Review:

Due in part to its limited seating and space, a visit to Mad Mex in Oakland affords an intimate, homey experience. Students flock here for the late-night bargain pricing. The Cal-Mex food --- dips, wings, wraps, enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, entrée salads, sides and desserts --- is not supposed to be authentic, but ingredients are fresh, frequently local and chef-selected. Pepita hummus with grilled flatbread and grilled-to-order mahi mahi tacos reflect the kitchen’s creative bent. To accommodate vegans, burritos can be made with vegan cheese and tofu sour cream. Desserts continue the Cal-Mex inspiration with an ice cream burrito and cinnamon-, fudge- and ice cream-topped Mexican chocolate brownie. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. The no-reservations policy means either go early or go thirsty and progress, while you wait, through the dozens of microbrews.
