Mais Arepas Restaurant Review:
On an off-the-beaten-path corner in the heart of the city, Mais Arepas is about the only restaurant within several blocks. It has a cozy café ambience, with wooden tables and chairs and a small bar, surrounded by huge picture windows. In a city that prides itself on inclusiveness when it comes to ethnic cuisine, few restaurants can boast of offering authentic Colombian cooking. Just to keep things a bit local, Mais Arepas’ Colombian-born owner calls the menu “Colombian Creole.” The restaurant’s name refers to traditional arepas, which are cornmeal cakes that can be filled with almost anything. The pulled pork may be your best choice, but the shredded beef arepas with plantains and mozzarella are well worth trying. For something lighter, the grilled jumbo shrimp arepas, with citrus slaw and avocado, is a good lunch option. The chef’s ceviche changes often, but with luck you’ll find shrimp marinated in lime and lemon juices, red onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapeños, served over avocado. The wine selections are limited, but they do mix a mean mojito. Consider the tres leches cake for dessert.
