Manivanh Thai Restaurant Review:
Quirky gems lurk amongst the taquerias and cleverly conceived hot-spots of the Mission District. Small and a little drab with its weathered sign, Manivanh Thai is one of them. Located on a bleak block of 24th Street, not far from SF General Hospital, the charms within belie the unassuming exterior. Clean, wood-paneled walls are bedecked with carvings and gilded iconography, and the tables are lovingly set and ready for incoming diners. Most importantly, the food sparkles. Plaa pad prig khing dresses up rock cod and green beans in a pungent red curry. Him man pan marries sliced beef with roasted cashew nuts and rich onions. The restaurant's larb ped is one of the best versions in the city---hot, sour and just sweet enough, a cold, crisp tangle of roasted duck bits and dressed cabbage. Dessert is a non-event here, but in its place no table should deny itself the pleasures of mu-yang, a barbecued pork smothered in chili sauce and herbs.
