Market Table Restaurant Review:
With large picture windows that look out onto the West Village intersection of Bedford and Carmine Streets, this quasi-rustic eatery serves up impressive greenmarket-driven plates. The straightforwardness of the place reflects former Mermaid Inn chef Mike Price’s commitment to simplicity. The grilled Portuguese sardine filets with fennel, tangerine, olives and ricotta salata is a study in elegant simplicity, as is the pan-roasted chicken with sweet potato salad, bok choy and hazelnut brown butter. For something slightly more complex, try the pancetta-wrapped pork tenderloin with banana fingerlings, fennel and roasted tomato or the tender grilled arctic char with creamed leeks, mushrooms, crispy onions and balsamic vinegar. The burger, only served at lunch, is topped with caramelized onions and could be a contender for best in the ’hood. For dessert, airy lemon pound cake is served with a scoop of mascarpone gelato, and panna cotta pairs with stewed rhubarb and balsamic strawberries. The wine list includes a selection of natural and biodynamic wines from around the world. This is one market you’ll want to revisit.
